Unisa online - Students at the heart of Unisa

Prof Makhanya seriously encouraged Unisa students to pursue academic excellence beyond degrees and diplomas

Unisa’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya held a meeting with new students at Sunnyside Campus on 18 April 2012. For new and current students it was a chance to engage with management and ask questions about policies and practices at the institution.

Dean of Students, Convy Baloyi facilitated the meeting and was encouraged that many of the students were studying and completing assignments before the gathering started. He introduced University Registrar, Prof Louis Molamu who had students in stitches when quoting a well known brain surgeon. “The brain is a wonderful thing; it never stops working, from the time you are born until you register for university.” Prof Molamu was however serious about his message. “Study hard, this country and continent require that you qualify.”

National Student Representative Council (NSRC) President, Sabelo Mhlungu assured the hall that his team would be working hard to change the perception that the NSRC is ineffective. He also promised that a prerequisite for future SRC members would be academic excellence. “We cannot have members of the SRC and they do not have good academic progress. You must have good grades to be a member,” he said.

Prof Makhanya bid the students who packed the hall, a warm welcome. He emphasised just how important students are to the university and cited that Unisa had contributed more than 90 thousand graduates in the past few years. He challenged students to be disciplined in their goals and to aim very high. “Students should dream big. Study to get a doctorate or to get a higher qualification; don’t just settle for a diploma or degree.” Prof Makhanya concluded by urging students to remain self-disciplined and said that he hoped to see all of them at their respective graduation ceremonies.

Staff and management welcomed new and current students who took time
