A fun warm-up of singing songs and running around the soccer field |
In partnership with the Vrije University (VU), Amsterdam, Unisa embarked on various soccer initiatives in support of the 2010 World Cup and our national team. This included soccer clinics for more than 300 children in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. The Pretoria soccer clinic kicked off on 12 June at the Tshwane University of Technology’s soccer fields.
Learners between the ages of 12 and 16 were brought together with the intention of being taught the importance of nation building and teamwork through sport. Schools included A Re Thabeng Primary (Soshanguve), Kutung Primary (Soshanguve), Mamelodi Primary (Mamelodi East), Sindawonye Primary (Mamelodi East), Mveledzo Primary (Rethabile), Arcadia Primary (Pretoria Central) and Bathokwa Primary (Saulsville). Excited learners from the various schools spent the day being coached by VU academics, keen to make a difference in these young lives.
Project leader and Unisa’s Director of International Relations, Siza Magubane, says while all the events will strengthen the collaborative ties between the two universities, the aim is to also to focus on youth, sport and reconciliation. Unisa’s Centre for Business Management played an equally important role with a generous sponsorship of soccer kits and water bottles for each and every child. Also on board was Supersport which sponsored soccer balls and lunch.
At the end of the activity filled day, the young learners were able to understand key values of sport which was gaining awareness of their own corporality, gaining awareness of rules and baring the feeling of loss. Soccer clinics for Durban and Cape Town were held on 17 and 23 June 2010 respectively. |
