Unisa’s Deputy Registrar, Prof Divya Singh, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Law on Monday 17 May 2010.
In her thesis entitled “Self-defence as a ground of justification in cases of battered women who kill their abusive partners”, she examines the application and understanding of self-defence in South African criminal law to situations where battered women kill their partners.
“This is a very happy day for me. My wish is that all the doctoral students use their research for good. They contain a lot of value that can benefit humanity and I hope they don’t just end up being piled on shelves, but benefitting the masses in some way or another,” said Prof Singh.
Her family, which included her husband, mother and father, accompanied her to the graduation ceremony. “We are very proud of her, truly ecstatic. She is also getting this doctorate in a period of institutional changes and an exciting year for Unisa. She has worked very hard and this degree is well deserved.” |
