On Monday 19 April 2010, Unisa conferred an honorary doctorate (LLD hc) on former Constitutional Court Judge, Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, for her sterling contributions to our justice system.
At the dawn of the democratic order in South Africa, Justice Mokgoro was appointed a judge of the newly established Constitutional Court. A tireless human rights activist and a former nursing assistant, she served extensively as a resource person for non-governmental and community-based organisations, focusing on the impact of law on society and on women and children.
She is currently the Chairperson of the South African Law Reform Commission and also sits on many boards. Justice Mokgoro is a member of the International Women’s Association and the International Association of Women Judges, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (as Interim President of the SA Chapter) and the SA Women Lawyers Association.
