Unisa online - Join us for Earth Hour 2010

As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative, Unisa endorses the relevant principles of the UNGC. These cover human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption. Unisa remains committed to supporting and advocating these principles throughout its sphere of influence, including in teaching, research and community engagement. The UNGC environmental principle eight clearly stipulates that organisations "should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility."

It is against this backdrop that Unisa supports the global Earth Hour. The Earth Hour initiative "is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future."

The Copenhagen Climate Summit in December 2010 failed to deliver the climate deal our planet needs. This year, WWF is challenging individuals to take the lead by pledging to reduce their own carbon footprint. We have to show world leaders that we are serious about tackling climate change and that we want them to deliver a fair, effective and binding climate deal - a deal which keeps global warming as far below 2 degrees as possible.

Pledge your support and commit to reducing your carbon footprint. Switch off your lights between 20:30 and 21:30 on Saturday 27 March 2010.
