Visit by the Mexican Youth Institute delegation

A delegation from the Mexican Youth Institute, accompanied by Ms Bernice Hlagala, Director for Youth in the Presidency, Republic of South Africa, along with two other delegates from that office, visited Unisa on 4 March 2010. The delegation, which included the General Coordinator of the World Youth Congress 2010, Mr Cecilio Garza, was welcomed by Prof Makhanya, Unisa's Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and other key role players from Unisa and industry.

"Unisa is one of the most important universities in South Africa and we need to establish solid relations and network with it. We believe that Unisa has a lot to offer young people from around the world, so we have come to exchange ideas," said Garza. According to Garza, the period August 2010 to August 2011 has been deemed the year of the youth by the United Nations (UN). The last time this was done was 25 years ago. It is with this in mind that the discussions were held.

According to Dr Raselekoane, a Youth Development lecturer, "Unisa is being recognised for its role when it comes to developing the youth, particularly with regard to the internationally accredited Diploma in Youth Development. We hope to learn from the delegates and, in turn, teach them something."

The message from Ms Bernice Hlagala, South African Director for Youth, was that the government works closely with Unisa when it comes to local and international collaborations aimed at empowering the youth. The youth are our priority and Unisa is one of the few tertiary institutions in South Africa offering a programme directly aimed at developing the youth.

The purpose of the visit was to share experiences and insights with regard to training and the education of youth workers.
