Better World project aims high

An initiative called the Better World Village, in partnership with Unisa's Summer Schools' Project, was launched on 25 February 2010 at the Premos Auditorium.

Five leading institutions are joining forces to create a safer and better City of Tshwane. The Tshwane Leadership Foundation, Ashoka Innovations for the Public, the City of Tshwane, Heartlines, Life College and Unisa have joined forces to create a village that will not only offer space to celebrate soccer, "but will offer local communities and visitors to the city an opportunity to contemplate a vision for a better world, with greater degrees of peace, socioeconomic justice, global equity and environmental integrity," said Kathrin Terblanche, Communications Manager for the village.

She added that the village will facilitate conversations on critical global issues ranging from homelessness, human trafficking, and sustainable local development and greening cities. Dr Genevieve James said: "The Unisa Summer Schools' Campaign for Learning seeks strategic opportunities and partnerships to share its objectives and maximise its reach. The Better World Village initiative is such an opportunity. This initiative will take place from 11 June 2010 to 11 July 2010 at Burgers Park in central Pretoria." She added that she hopes to reach all members of society - members of the public, grassroots communities, business, corporate and educational institutions, and schools. The hope is that people will want to acquire skills, become university graduates, understand the world and become aware about social justice issues.
