The process continues to find a suitable name for the New Entrance Building on the Muckleneuk Campus. At the Council meeting held on 27 November 2009, it was decided that the process of the naming of the New Entrance Building would be referred to the Branding Committee of Council, under the chairpersonship of Mr Peter Vundla.

At the first meeting with Mr Vundla, it was agreed that the existing Policy "The naming and renaming of Unisa buildings and other properties" be followed.

The members of the Committee, according to the Policy, for the naming of the New Entrance Building comprise the following:

  • Council member: Mr Peter Vundla (Chairperson)
  • The Registrar: Prof Louis Molamu
  • Representative: Dr Thandi Sidzumo-Mazibuko (IF), Mr Sanele Mavuso (SRC) and Mr Goitsemang Nkwe or Cleo Lephoto (Nehawu)
  • Two additional members with relevant background: Dr Marié Ferreira (Executive Director: CC&M) and Mr Nhlanhla Sikosana (Director, Marketing: CC&M)

The five criteria for the naming of the New Entrance Building which apply according to the Policy are:

  • The proposed name(s) should:
    - support the vision and the mission of the University,
    - promote the new brand of the University,
    - have an association with Unisa and South Africa and/or has relevance to the University or the country, and
    - highlight the purpose of education.
  • The naming and renaming of buildings and properties would be based on names of persons, places, events, activities, fauna or flora.
  • Buildings or properties will be named after individuals, organisations, companies or events that made outstanding contributions to Unisa, the country, the continent or the world.
  • Buildings or properties will not be named after individuals who are currently serving Unisa or after politicians currently in service.
  • The naming or renaming shall adhere to the principle of compliance with recognised standards and legal requirements.

A brief motivation should be provided based on the above criteria. Click here to submit your proposed name for the New Entrance Building.
