Educational art
The Unisa Art Gallery held an educational walkabout exhibition on 16 February 2010.
The exhibition, filled with abstract and riveting artworks, was attended by learners from the Mountain Cottage School from Hartbeespoort Dam and escorted around the gallery by the Unisa Art Gallery's curator, Bongani Mkhonza.
The learners learnt about the artworks and got the chance to ask questions. Some staff members from departments such as Archaeology and Theology joined in the fun.
Mkhonza encouraged the learners, staff and artists to reflect on the artwork, and then introduced them to some critical elements of the art works.
Also present were the artists Juliet Hofmeyr, JJ Clark, Katya Venter and Janine Suzanne, who created the "Bones and Bullets" art work. Suzanne’s dark and eerie piece, which took a year to complete, was provoked by "the hostile behaviour cultivated in society and how the military process changes humans into killing machines."
By the end of the exhibition, the student artists gave their feedback about the whole experience. One artist had the following to say: "This experience has sharpened their presentation skills and increased their ability to articulate issues about their artworks." |
