The official opening of the Advanced Diploma, final-year multimedia, and a selection of third-year visual arts student exhibition, was attended by close to 100 people on Saturday 30 January 2010.

The exhibition was opened by Celia de Villiers, Visual Arts lecturer in Unisa's Department of Art History, Visual Art and Musicology. De Villiers said that in studying art there is a "progressive growth towards independence: during the first levels, projects are stipulated and the boundaries are defined; within the second level, the parameters are wider, yet project briefs provide directive guidance. Yet when the student reaches the senior phase of a third level, the challenge for the student (as it would be for the professional artist) is to map their own creative path."

The works on exhibition reflect students’ awareness of contemporary attitudes and cutting-edge creative development both locally and internationally. The opening function gave students the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with supportive and understanding family members, friends and Visual Arts and Multimedia lecturers. Underscoring this support, Marc du Toit and Juliet Hofmeyr both received certificates to acknowledge their hard work, dedication and consistent pursuit of excellence in their studies.

Katya Venter, candidate for the Advanced University Diploma in Visual Arts, states that the concept of her body of work, entitled "Purposefully Drifting", is about her "purposeful drifting and wishing to be 'somewhere else' ". With this exhibition, Katya and the 10 other students are indeed "mapping their own creative paths" from being student artists to becoming professional artists.

The exhibition will be open for public viewing until 26 February 2010. For more information, please contact the gallery (012 429 6823; ukun1@unisa.ac.za).
