Unisa will host the 5th Unisa International String Competition, sponsored by Vodacom, from 22 January to 5 February 2010.
Twenty-seven of the most talented young string players in the world, representing 18 countries, will compete in this year's competition, which will kick off at 19:00 tonight in the ZK Matthews Great Hall. The field will include three South Africans, who automatically qualified through last year's 2nd Unisa National String Competition: Avigail Bushakevitz, Jacqueline Wedderburn-Maxwell (also the youngest competitor) and Vicente Espi.
This competition is the only one of its kind on the African continent that is recognised by the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva. It boasts a total prize money of R1 000 000, concert tours of South Africa for both first prize winners (violin and cello) and return air tickets.
All rounds, including the two final evenings on 4 and 5 February 2010, will take place in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on the Muckleneuk campus. The finalists will perform as soloists in violin and/or cello concertos with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the South African-born Conrad Elmer van Alphen.
