Unisa does well at the 10th SAUSSA Games held in Namibia
The University of South Africa continued with its domination of the SAUSSA men’s soccer championship for the fifth year in a row.
Unisa beat the host, the University of Namibia, 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw during normal time to win the soccer championship. The extra time failed to produce any goals and the final was decided on penalties.
In the group stages, Unisa lost to Namibia 1-0, but beat Botswana 2-0 and the University of North West 2-0. Unisa also beat the University of Lesotho 2-0 in extra time to reach the finals.
Unisa also did well in the following sporting codes:
- The netball team beat the fearsome team from Botswana to win the bronze medal for the second time in row.
- The women and men volleyball teams gave a good performance, but were unable to reach the knockout stages.
- The athletics team won medals in the 800m and the 4x100m ladies relay.
High praise should go to the Unisa team for their outstanding performances despite the Windhoek heat. During the awards ceremony, special mention was made of Unisa's Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barney Pityana, for his support of the teams. The university also received awards for soccer, netball, volleyball, and for participating in a cultural performance.
