Final Year Visual Arts Student Exhibition
The UNISA Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology take cognisance of the cultural diversity and needs of their students within a dynamic and democratic society. They aim to promote visual arts awareness and nurture creative and critical skills. Their commitment to high standards is evident in the exceptional 2009 final year student exhibition in the gallery on the main campus in Pretoria.
The Art Department’s teaching policy does not assume that students come to us to gain access to some form of universal 'knowledge' and 'truth'. The belief that education is negotiated between the student and Unisa can be seen in the large variety of concepts and techniques applied by this year’s show. Students are encouraged from their first level to bring their own reality; their own structures of knowledge and truth, formulated by their own specific cultural, social, political and economic experiences and perspectives which are clearly reflected in the current fourth level exhibition.
Lecturers provide the students with a course structure that attempts to allow all students to grow and realise their potential. They go on to offer their skills, expertise and experiences in the making, understanding and promotion of visual art in the spirit of the University’s stated aim of pursuing free, open and critical scholarship. Final year students in the 4-year Visual Arts degree course and those in the Multi Media (digital-art) 3-year degree course are expected to produce a mini solo exhibition, a professional catalogue of their own work and a well researched, critical article on contemporary art which has relevance to their own artworks.
The top students for 2009 are:
Visual Arts: Ronit Judelman, followed by Maaike Bakker and Staša Hlava who obtained distinctions for all three components of their course.
Multi Media/New Media: JJ Clark, followed by Juliet Hofmeyr and Marc du Toit.
