SRC introduced to top management

The recent election of Unisa’s National Student Representative Council (SRC) has been described as a historic institutional achievement, one that is expected to change the face of student involvement in the management of the university.

On 25 November 2009, the 12 SRC members were introduced to the university’s top management by Prof David Mosoma, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Principal: Learner Support and Student Affairs, and the Executive Director: Dean of Students, Mr Convy Baloyi.

Both Prof Mosoma and Mr Baloyi said they were delighted to be present on such a "historic" day where the outcome of the democratic process that students embarked on was being delivered to management.

Advising the SRC, Prof Mosoma encouraged them, among other things, to lead by example, pursue their academic studies with vigour, ensure students in the regions are informed about SRC decisions and actions, and to always represent and present the values and academic needs of students at Unisa.

Prof Barney Pityana, Unisa's Principal and Vice Chancellor, said this has to be a new era for Unisa. He said Unisa is committed to government’s plan for Higher Education, stating that it is important for Unisa to grow the next generation of leaders in South Africa. He also indicated that Unisa should be instrumental in building skills that are necessary for the development of our country. He informed the SRC that they were elected into student leadership at a critical and exciting time. He advised the SRC to take seriously the character of learning at Unisa and said the university aimed to have graduates that stand apart from others in terms of intellect and character.

SRC President, Mr Nhlamulo Siwela, thanked the thousands of students who voted in the election and announced that the renaissance of the SRC had begun. He said they would steer the SRC to ensure it is a vehicle of structure and change.
