Italian Ambassador to South Africa visits Unisa

On Thursday 12 November 2009, His Excellency Dr Elio Menzione, Italian Ambassador to South Africa, paid a courtesy visit to Unisa.

Dr Menzione, who holds a Law Degree from the University of Pavia, entered the Italian Diplomatic Service in 1975. He was appointed as Ambassador of Italy to South Africa, accredited to Lesotho, Mauritius, Madagascar and Namibia on 2 September 2008.

In welcoming His Excellency Dr Menzione to Unisa, Prof Pityana stressed that Unisa values the support and assistance of the Ambassador and the Italian Embassy in South Africa, noting also the continuous sponsorship of an Italian professor at Unisa. In his response, Dr Menzione assured Prof Pityana that he hoped to establish a very special relationship with the university, and with South Africa and the rest of Africa. This was the Ambassador’s first official visit to a South African university and he was pleased that it was at Unisa. The Ambassador pledged his support and undertook to facilitate cooperation between Unisa and universities in Italy.

Prof Grazia Weinberg from the Department of Classics and Modern European Languages will work with the Italian Embassy in assessing possibilities for cooperation with universities in Italy.

HE Dr Menzione was accompanied by Dr Madina Fabris, Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria.
