Liana Griesel represents Unisa at a Commonwealth of Learning workshop
The Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) hosted a workshop from 21 to 23 October 2009 for delegates from Commonwealth countries to discuss the development and implementation of a cost-effective quality assurance model. This model is available to all post secondary, tertiary-level institutions in Commonwealth member states. It is a one-size fits all model which aims to improve quality by strengthening established processes and systems.
Liana Griesel, Executive Director: Strategy, Planning and Quality Assurance, opened the workshop with an address where she emphasised the importance of an independent review of the quality arrangements of an institution. The strategic benefits and their impact on the institution’s culture and climate formed the foundation of her address. She stressed that the impact of a quality audit is greater when an institution’s planning regime is flexible enough for continuous innovation and change.
Prof Jegede, Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, followed with the emerging quality issues impacting on higher education in developing countries. He emphasised the importance of aligning quality assurance and quality management, and indicated that attention should be given to the management of quality so as to sustain the promise of better instruction, better quality of learning, and far better returns on investment in education and training.
Unisa will continue to play a role in the development and continuous improvement of the Commonwealth of Learning quality assurance model to achieve this end. |
