Unisa KwaZulu-Natal peer educators join the fight against HIV and Aids
KwaZulu-Natal peer educators, in conjunction with New Start, coordinated an HIV/Aids Awareness project between 8 and 11 September 2009 at Unisa's KwaZulu-Natal's regional office.
According to a UNAIDS report, it is imperative to focus on HIV prevention among young people, because young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are the most threatened by the Aids epidemic. It is estimated that they account for nearly half of all new infections and are, therefore, the greatest hope for turning the tide against Aids.
The Unisa KwaZulu-Natal peer educators want fellow students to realise that they are at the frontline of the war against Aids and are our country’s major asset in this fight. In the light of this, they put together a programme of entertainment and education to teach students about the benefits of prevention and the treatment options available.
New Start encouraged students to be tested and provided confidential testing services to students. Vibe FM Radio Station and entertainers motivated students to be tested.
The Peer Educators celebrated the success of their project at the Durban ice rink. Mr Magnate Ntombela, Regional Director: Unisa KwaZulu-Natal, thanked the peer educators for their hard work and congratulated them on the success of their project. |
