Amasiko eSintu Craft Exhibition at the Unisa Art Gallery
On 24 September 2009, the Unisa Art Gallery officially opened the Amasiko eSintu Craft Exhibition. In keeping with the 2009 theme for Heritage Month - "Celebrating South African craft as heritage" - the exhibition aimed to showcase the best craft in South Africa. The exhibited works were supplied by various craft organisations and artists from around the country; artworks and traditional pots from the Unisa Art Gallery and the Unisa Anthropology museum were also included as part of the exhibition.

The exhibition was opened by Prof Pitika Ntuli, who not only gave an informative address about the importance of celebrating our heritage, but also entertained guests with poetry recitals. Guests were also treated to musical and poetry performances by primary school children from Olievenhoutbosch Higher Primary School and the Unisa student poetry club.

A poetry book launch was also held on 17 October 2009 where prominent poets and book publishers were present to network with up-and-coming Unisa student poets. The Unisa National SRC president, Nhlamulo Siwela, was also present.
The Unisa Art Gallery is committed to serving the needs of the Unisa student community by providing mentorship in the field of arts and culture. The Unisa Art Gallery also encourages students and learners to visit its exhibitions and use it collection as a resource centre.
