Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Justice Dikgang Moseneke, believes that Unisa’s dedication to the service of humanity is a sterling example of what all South Africans should be. He was speaking at the elegant Chancellor’s Gala Dinner held this year on 22 October in the Es’kia Mphahlele Registration Hall.
Justice Moseneke, a Unisa alumnus, was honoured at the dinner where he was awarded the Chancellor’s Calabash Award. In his acceptance speech, he said it was imperative that South Africans remained patriotic and did their best for humanity and transformation in this generation, because it is a known fact that good societies are built over millennia.
Also at the heart of the dinner was the development of Unisa’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Chancellor of Unisa, the Honourable Judge President Bernard Ngoepe, described the dinner as a truly wonderful event for Unisa... one that celebrated the "augustness of the university".
Chancellor Ngoepe said the School enhanced Unisa’s rich and diverse university environment and the university’s overall commitment to research development. He said the development of the SGS was in line with Unisa’s 2015 Strategic Plan to promote research, and increase capacity and productivity.
The primary emphasis of the School is on interdisciplinary research with a strong African focus. The School aims to engage in research projects that have social relevance and intellectual currency to supply face-to-face training for master’s and doctoral students.
In his address, Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barney Pityana, welcomed esteemed guests, which included Judge Edward Cameron; chief economist of the African Development Bank, Mr Ebrima Faal; members of the Chancellor’s Club and members of the South African government. Prof Pityana thanked Chancellor Ngoepe for the service he has rendered to Unisa and for the effort he puts into the Chancellor’s Club. He also thanked, among others, the private sector, donors and the South African business community and said that no university could sustain itself without the support of the private sector and the goodwill of those in the country. "This is a wonderful occasion to have you here with us." Donations totalling R2,2 million were made to Unisa by Skynet and BESTmed.
Also celebrated on the night was Chancellor Ngoepe’s birthday. |
