Unisa's 7th Music Festival

The 7th Unisa Music Festival took place from 23 to 25 September 2009 at the Conference Hall on the Sunnyside campus, and a prize giving concert was held in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on Saturday 26 September 2009. It was presented by the Unisa Music Foundation and financially supported by the Unisa Centre for Business Management.

The aim of the festival is to explore and promote new talents, to raise the general performance standard, and to encourage participants to be dedicated in their study of their instrumental and vocal skills. The various sections included baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary music for the instrumental category, while the vocal category included opera, jazz, traditional and kwaito. This year the total prize money was almost R80 000.

The adjudicators were Dr Bertha Spies (ex music lecturer at Unisa, University of Pretoria and the Northwest University), Mrs Rose Mashigo (principal of the Tsaroga-Phoka Primary School in Soshanguve), Mr Thembela Vokwana (lecturer in the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology at Unisa) and Mr John Roos (non-voting chairman and the Artistic Director of the Unisa National and International Music Competitions).

The Unisa Music Foundation is passionate about introducing music literacy and basic instrumental skills to as many of our talented youth as possible on a countrywide basis. The office of the Music Foundation organises music lessons on Saturdays during the school term in Soshanguve, Ga Rankuwa, Mamelodi, Tembisa and Atteridgeville, while funding projects in other provinces. The Foundation evaluates requests for the provision of instruments from various community music schools and purchases instruments with the aid of sponsored funds. These instruments are distributed on an annual loan agreement to the various recipients and institutions.
