Unisa increases awareness of staff and students with disabilities
Unisa Disability Awareness Month was officially launched at a glamorous event at the Protea restaurant on Spring Day, 1 September. The event was hosted by the Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (ARCSWiD).
Disability Awareness Month aims to spotlight issues pertaining to people with disabilities and how best their needs may be accommodated. It also aims to highlight the challenges faced by students with disabilities in higher education.
Although the event gave staff and students an opportunity to relax, it was also a time to learn about the new technology available to people living with disabilities. Various organisations and stakeholders displayed assistive devices and up-to-date technology at an exhibition held at the launch event.
Casual Day, which is held on the first Friday of September each year, aims to raise funds for organisations working with people with disabilities. Unisa staff support this important initiative each year by buying Casual Day stickers. This year, Unisa proudly handed over the amount of R3000 to the South African National Council for the Blind, and R5000 to the Transoranje School for the Deaf.
ARCSWiD and the Directorate for Community Engagement and Outreach have planned a number of activities for Unisa's Disability Awareness Month, which will be advertised via the daily e-notice. |
