The Centre for Business Management (CBM), represented by Prof JW Strydom, Prof J Badenhorst-Weiss, Prof S Rudansky-Kloppers and Ms P Prinsloo, made a successful book run to the Pretoria West High School on 20 August 2009.

After handing over nearly 1 000 books to the school library, two students were awarded full bursaries. Carol-Ann Olivier and Modise Sebaone were the lucky recipients of this bursary that will allow them to complete the Programme in Customer Service Management through the CBM during 2010.

Pretoria West High School opened its doors in 1947, primarily due to the influx of residents with the establishment of ISCOR close by. Today the school is considered one of the model schools in Gauteng regarding transformation and has been visited by the previous Minister of Education, Kader Asmal, to congratulate them on their achievements.

Despite, the school’s ongoing success, it is experiencing severe financial difficulties and, even though they have been able to meet their financial obligations thus far, opportunities for development to maintain the high standard of education are diminishing. The learners of Pretoria West High School include the poorest of the poor, with 80% of the learners living in areas such as Attridgeville, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa. The school is fully integrated with a racial composition of 95% black learners and 5% white learners.

Notwithstanding the poor financial conditions, the school has excelled in its academic performance: a 100% pass rate in 2008 resulted in them being awarded a Matric 2008 Mayoral Excellence award from the Mayor of Tshwane. It is also one of the Top 10 Academic Achieving schools in District D15 for the June 2009 examinations.

The Centre for Business Management is proud to be associated with the Pretoria West High School and its learners, and will continue to support them in their quest for excellence.
