New acquisitions' exhibition opens at the Unisa Art Gallerya
On 15 August 2009, the Unisa Art Gallery held the official opening of its new acquisitions' exhibition. This annual exhibition showcases a selection of recent additions to the Unisa permanent collection. The exhibited works represent a broad range of South African artists, from "old masters" like Alexis Preller and Maud Sumner, to cutting-edge contemporary artists like Diane Victor and Abrie Fourie.
The main speaker was Gwen Miller, who represented the gallery management committee which is responsible for selecting works for the permanent collection. She explained how painstaking the process is of selecting works for the collection, and the different circumstances under which these artworks are collected. Jacob Lebeko, who is the gallery assistant curator, also mentioned the fact that the artworks encompassed a wide variety of themes, media and styles --- and this makes the curatorial layout all the more challenging.
The opening function also gave the Unisa Art Gallery the opportunity to introduce the gallery’s new curator, Bongani Mkhonza, to the public. Mkhonza said that he views himself as a "new acquisition". He added that he foresees great things for the future of the gallery, especially with the new gallery space opening early in 2010.
