Men’s health day a huge success
Unisa Peer Educators are helping to create a healthy Unisa community. They recently hosted a men's health day which featured a number of health institutions, such as Virgin Active, the Cancer Association of South Africa, the Department of Health, the South African National Blood Service, Men’s Clinic International, and so on.
HIV/Aids activist, Mr Kenny Chewe, said that living with HIV is like living on the other side of the mountain, the title of his book. "The way you live your life changes, because you need to look if what you are eating is supporting your immune system." He added that the other problem is that most things that were normal to you begin to change. "If you want to apply for an investment, you face challenges and some of the friends that you have sometimes leave you," he added. "I have lived with the disease for about 20 years and I do not take any medication for it," said Mr Chewe. He attributed this to his serious commitment to exercise and a healthy diet.
The event organiser, Ms Irene Mohasoa, said that men are often not keen to go for health checkups, so we bring these health specialists to them. She added that Unisa needs healthy students, because "healthy students perform well." |
