Soprano Pretty Yende makes her debut at Unisa

During an exciting concert by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock, the 23-year old South African soprano, Pretty Yende, made her debut in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on the Muckleneuk campus.

Pretty recently won first place in almost every category in the 28th Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna, Austria, including 1st Prize Opera, 1st Prize Operetta, Media Jury Prize and the Audience Prize. Following this overwhelming success, she has been offered singing engagements all over Europe for next year. It is quite an achievement for this talent who hails from Piet Retief and studied at UCT with Virginia Davids to be launched to international operatic stardom in this way!

Her partner in song for this gala concert was the outstanding young South African tenor, Given Nkosi. They delighted an enraptured audience with sparkling arias and duets from the opera and operetta repertoire leading to a standing ovation at the end of the concert.

We join the audience in shouting "bravo, bravo" to these two singers who make us so proud to be South Africans.
