Unisa hosts Newsmaker of the Year
On 24 July 2009, Unisa hosted the prestigious National Press Club’s Newsmaker of the Year award for 2008. The joint winners were Eskom and Cope. Eskom made headlines during the first half of 2008 when load shedding affected traffic and businesses, while Cope dominated news headlines in the second half of the year with the split from the African National Congress and the formation of the new political party.
Previous recipients of the award have included the Springbok rugby team, Jacob Zuma, Charlize Theron, Zachie Ahmat and the Treatment Action Campaign, the South African Rand and Helen Zille.
Since the National Press Club turns 30 this year, it was a double celebration held in the Protea Restaurant on the Muckleneuk Campus. Prof Mandla Makhanya, acting Principal and Vice-Chancellor, welcomed guests on behalf of Unisa. Read his speech here. |
