Power breakfast targets security industry

The Department of Criminology and Security Science held a power breakfast on 11 May 2009 at the Irene Country Lodge for members of the security industry.

The morning began with a presentation by Dr Rudolph Zinn from the Department of Crime and Forensic Investigation entitled "Preventative security measures for house robberies: perpetrators’ perspectives". Touching on issues such as the extent of house robberies, the times when they occur and the selection of targets, Dr Zinn also considered deterrent and preventative security measures. A disquieting statistic was that 40 house robberies occur every day in the country, 20 of them in Gauteng.

Prof Anthony Minnaar then addressed the audience on the new degree, a BA in Criminal Justice with specialisation in Security Management, that will be offered from 2010. He spoke about the new modules for the further professionalisation of the industry and explained the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process and new credit exemptions. He appealed to the security industry to provide assistance in revising existing modules and said that the information for the new modules would also require input from experts in specialised fields.
