SBL's oldest alumnus has fond memories of Unisa

As he walked down the Unisa SBL corridors on 23 June 2009, 91-year old Rev Arthur Colin Kain, MBL class of 1969, looked fondly at some of the old pictures on the wall, his memory clearly recalling most of the faces on them.

Rev Kain seems to the SBL’s oldest living alumnus. He resides in Cape Town and is still very active, assisting with invigilation during exams. In fact, part of his recent visit to Gauteng included submitting a copy of a thesis which he, as the external examiner, considered excellent.

Rev Kain completed his BCom degree through Unisa and worked as a production engineer in the freight rail industry. He later registered for his MBL; in those days, the cost was £25 per module. He also mentioned that in those days, the focus of the MBL was mostly on finance and was pleased to see how the content of the programme had evolved to cater for the ever-changing business environment.

Shortly after completing his degree, he received a calling into ministry where he has faithfully served until today. When asked if the MBL has in any way assisted him in the leadership and administration of his church, Rev Kain said: "Absolutely. The MBL’s case studies are still a winning methodology! While I was an engineer, leadership and strategy were very important; when I joined the ministry, I realised that I can contribute to the leadership and management of the church more efficiently."

"I have kept in touch with a few of my former study group members, including André Mark and Grant Schutte, and we send each other Christmas cards every year," says Rev Kain.

The Unisa SBL’s MBL degree will be in its 45th year of offering in 2010, and together with the school’s MBA, has contributed over a third to South Africa’s MBA/MBL graduate pool.
