World Criminology Congress 2014 to be hosted by CRIMSA
Unisa academic, Prof Anthony Minnaar of the Department of Criminology and Security Science, School of Criminal Justice, College of Law, travelled to Paris, France, in May to make a presentation to the Board of the International Society of Criminology (ISC).
In his capacity as President of the Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa, he made a presentation regarding CRIMSA’s application to host the ISC World Congress (held every three years) in South Africa in 2014. CRIMSA was competing with Criminology Associations in Mexico and China for this hosting right.
On 12 June 2009, the ISC Board informed CRIMSA that their application to host the 2014 World Congress was successful. This will be the first time that the ISC World Criminology Congress will be held on the African continent. Furthermore, it will enable CRIMSA to invite and sponsor criminologists from all over Africa to attend the ISC World Congress in 2014, thereby further stimulating interest in and growth of African criminology and its allied disciplines. It will be an added stimulus to the continued growth and encouragement of criminology in South Africa.
CRIMSA plans to use some of the funds generated by the 2014 World Congress to establish a bursary fund to send African criminologists to future ISC World Congresses.
The Unisa Departments of Criminology and Security Science, and Police Practice and Penology will be involved in organising the 2014 ISC World Congress, since many of their staff are members of CRIMSA and serve on its Council and Executive Committee. |
