The BCCAD reaches out to rural communities

Mr Ross Wells (Student Counsellor) and Mr Mbuso Ndlovu (Administrative Officer) from the Counselling, Career and Academic Development section at the Pietermaritzburg Service Centre visited the Implendle district (close to Pietermaritzburg) on 18 and 19 May 2009. The aim of this visit was to discuss career and study options with Grades 11 and 12 learners in the area. In total, they spoke to 961 learners at 9 schools.

"We were very happy to meet learners who are ambitious about their careers; some learners knew what they wanted, but some were confused. We discussed career and study options with learners who were unsure and held discussions with others to help them clarify their career goals. Most learners did not have enough information about career decision making and different careers, and we provided them with the necessary information. We are extremely satisfied with the outreach, because we believe that learners learnt more about their options and were able to get answers to their questions. The response from learners and teachers was very positive and we received invitations to revisit the area."

"We are very enthusiastic about this project as it gave us the opportunity to work with rural communities who usually have less access to information about their career and study options. Although we were confronted with challenges involving extensive travel, it was a very rewarding experience given the feedback we received. We intend engaging in this outreach programme on an annual basis."

Please contact Mbuso Ndlovu for more information on this project.
