Unisa online - Take a girl child to work project

Take a girl child to work day project

To mark the 4th anniversary of Unisa's participation in Cell C’s "Take a girl child to work day" campaign which will take place on 28 May 2009, Unisa, through its Community Engagement and Outreach Directorate, once again encourages employees to bring along their daughters, sisters, cousins, granddaughters and nieces (who are in Grades 11 or 12 only) to the workplace.

The theme for this year’s campaign is "Change your world", based in part on Ghandi’s "Be the agent of the change you want to see in your world". Those words have so much power in them. Our theme is about women and girls empowering themselves with the knowledge and skills they need to become active and responsible citizens in their communities and South Africa, to change their future for the better and, consequently, to change the world around them.

Historically, the majority of women and girls in South Africa have been marginalised. Yet they constitute over 50% of the South African population and are a critical resource pool for desperately needed skills in the country. Take a girl child to work day® has, over the years, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of women and girls by ensuring a whole day is dedicated to giving them insight into the numerous opportunities available to them in society and the world of work.

It’s also about exposing them to strong female role models in our society and instilling in them a "can do" attitude towards their own lives and a heightened sense of the role they can play in the country. Take a girl child to work day campaign also demonstrates Unisa's commitment to the socioeconomic development of our communities.

We would like to encourage staff to participate by hosting learners in their respective departments/directorates. Please send the names of learners not later than 22 May 2009 to Ms Susan Lupton
(Luptoss@unisa.ac.za; 012 429 3957).
