North Eastern region looks after students with disabilities

The North Eastern region recently handed over a total of nine computers, valued at R170 000, to visually impaired students. The equipment was bought with funds sourced by the North Eastern regional office from the Department of Labour and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Other assistive devices, including Braille printers, have also been sourced and will be delivered at a later stage.

The computers were loaded with specialised software, such as Jaws, Dolphin Pen and Zoom Text. The Jaws software is a voice-activated system which allows students who are visually impaired to work on a computer, while Zoom Text allows students to enlarge screen text.

Staff and students in the North Eastern region are very excited about this development, because it allows visually impaired students to do their work and assignments. In an environment of reduced funding, it is a big achievement and shows the university’s determination to be the African university in the service of humanity.

Ms DRM Bopape, Regional director, handed over the computer equipment.
