Unisa online - Our children live in a globalised world

Our children live in a globalised world

A total of 38 children participated in this week's Children's Map Competition on the Florida campus which was hosted by the Department of Geography, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The theme for this year's competition was "Living in a globalised world".

The aims of the competition were to promote children's creative representation of the world, to enhance their cartographic awareness and to make them more conscious of their environment.

All the participants were children of Florida campus staff members under the age of 15. The winners of the competition were as follows: Thato Mokoena (under 9 age category), Bohlale Teffo (under 12 category) and Anita de Jager (under 16 category). Prof Elri Liebenberg (former Head of Department of Geography at Unisa) presented the winners with geography books, puzzles and atlases.

The competition is a springboard for the Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition 2009. All maps drawn by these children will be entered into this competition. All the entries will also be on display during the next International Cartographic Association (ICA) Conference as part of the International Map Exhibition which will be held during the 24th International Cartographic Conference of the International Cartographic Association in Santiago, Chile, later this year.

For more information on the competition and on submission procedures, please contact the Department of Geography on 011 471 3689/2084.
