National honour for Visual Arts at Unisa

Ms Gwen Miller of the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology was commissioned by the Absa Group to act as National Judge for the prestigious annual Absa Atelier Art Awards for 2009.

Her brief entailed travelling around the country to all the regional centres where she headed the selection along with regional judges. The final judging will take place in May. This annual art award has been in existence for the past 24 years and is the biggest art prize in the country.

The overall winner will receive a  a monetary prize of R110 000,00 and a return air ticket to Paris, France, to attend the Cite Internationale des Arts for a stay of between three and six months. Ten other prizes will also be awarded during the final judging.

Last year, Ms Celia de Villiers, who is also part of this Department, also acted as National Judge for this prestigious award.
