Popular student day to be an annual event

The Economic and Management Sciences Student Association (Emssa), together with the Unisa BCompt Society (UBS), held the first student open day for students in the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) on Tuesday 31 March 2009. It provided an opportunity for students, staff, representatives from both the public and private sectors, and professional bodies to meet.

In her opening address, Prof Hellicy Ngambi, Acting Executive Dean of CEMS, congratulated the students on the initiative and said that it was the first time a student organisation had organised an open day for current students.

According to Mr Richard Chauke, Chairperson of Emssa, the aim was to expose students to the real working world. It also gave professional bodies and public and private institutions the opportunity to network with students and to inform them about possible opportunities. These organisations made presentations on the day. The organisations included the City of Tshwane, the Association for Operations Management of South Africa (SAPICS) and the Department of Public Enterprise (DPE).

Mrs Annemarie Davis, a senior lecturer in the School of Management Sciences and the recipient of the 2008 Vice-Chancellor’s award for Excellence in Tuition, told students about the importance of setting goals.

Praise for the event came from different quarters. Students, staff and the representatives from the different organisations were unanimous in their support for the open day and the important networking opportunities it offered.
