The University of South Africa will be supporting Earth Hour on Saturday 28 March 2009 by switching off its electricity between 20:30 and 21:30 on both the Sunnyside and Muckleneuk campuses in Pretoria and on the Durban campus. The university’s computer mainframe has its own power source which will start up automatically when the electricity is switched off. Since it requires specialised knowledge and experience to be able to switch off the main electricity in buildings, the Polokwane and Parow offices’ electricity will remain on for safety reasons.
Prof Barney Pityana has applauded the Earth Hour initiative, saying that Unisa was privileged to be part of this environmental project, particularly since Africa’s environment is so vulnerable. Climate change will potentially have an enormous negative effect on this continent where poverty is extreme and millions rely on subsistence farming.
