Team members at the SAUSSA Games in Malawi
The Unisa soccer team before their final game against Swaziland

The Unisa soccer team did the university proud by winning a gold soccer medal (the fourth in a row) during the recent annual Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association Games (SAUSSA) organised by the University of Malawi in Blantyre from 8 to 11 December 2008. The Unisa soccer team has not lost a single game at the SAUSSA games in the past year --- something that will hopefully continue well into the future. The team beat the host, Malawi, 2-0; drew 0-0 with Botswana; and beat Swaziland 8-0 in the final game.
The netball team also won a bronze medal, their first medal since the university started participating in the SAUSSA Games. The athletics team also did well; they won several medals and were awarded first place overall.

The teams wish to thank the following sponsors for their generosity: Unisa's Centre for Business Management, the Centre for African Renaissance Studies, Unisa Foundation and Alumni Relations, Corporate Communication and Marketing, the College of Law, the College of Economic and Management Sciences, the College of Human Sciences and the university management team, as well as the Human Rights Commission and Pretoria North Toyota.
The trip was exciting, but fraught with challenges, especially in Zimbabwe. This trip was an experience of a lifetime for most of the team members. The University of Namibia will organise and host the 2009 SAUSSA Games in December 2009.
All members of staff who would like to join one of these teams should contact JP Matlala (012 481 2859; matlajp@unisa.ac.za). |
