National AIDS day - celebrating partnerships
The Department of Social Work hosted this event in Durban on Monday 1 December 2008. During the event, Mr Magnate Ntombela (Regional Director: Unisa KwaZulu-Natal) presented the peer educators with certificates in recognition of their commitment and hard work in various local communities during 2008.
Five peer educators lit candles during a candle lighting prayer ceremony. Thuli Shange prayed for those who had lost their battle with AIDS, Mnquobi Khuboni for those who bravely faced the ongoing challenges of HIV infections, Thumelo Mokeona for those who cared for people living with HIV and AIDS, and Nokuthula Ndlovu for hope that a cure would be found. Linda Sapo reminded us that HIV is still around and that we must continue to hope and work until it is defeated.
Peer educator, Sabelo Mafuleka, recited a very moving poem that he wrote. A slide show was shown where peer educators talked about their individual experiences in forming partnerships in the community they worked in and where they reflected on their experiences as peer educators. Peer educators also created quilts or other artwork with their community partners to reflect their experiences in the community. These items were unveiled during the ceremony and will be placed on permanent display at the Durban Learning Centre.
