Mr Belling's dissertation dealt with an important topic in the real estate field. Land restitution and compensation is of concern both locally and internationally, and Mr Belling is an acknowledged expert in this field. The literature study is probably the most comprehensive in the world to date and could form the basis of one or more scientific articles. The practical applications, in the form of case studies, demonstrate the evolution of thinking in South Africa and also Mr Belling's approach to property valuation. Because of Mr Belling's prominence in the professional property valuation industry, the three cases have actually influenced the evolution of land restitution valuation theory and practice in South Africa.
In order to obtain admission to the MTech, Mr Belling completed a formal examination under the RPL rules of Unisa. The university, however, did not accept this outcome and compelled Mr Belling to submit to a second RPL examination, which he passed with distinction.
