Unisa online - Music talent dazzles

Competitors and scholarship winners: Winand Grundling, Gareth Edward Ross & Ammiel Bushakevitz

Five candidates who performed exceptionally well in the Unisa Teacher's and Performer's Licentiate exams were invited to participate in the Unisa Overseas Scholarship Competition, with a total of R205 000 in prize money.

The competition was concluded with a concert, after which the scholarship winners were announced and received their awards from Prof Kobie Kleynhans, Vice-Principal: Finance and University Estates.

The winners were as follows:

  • PJ Lemmer Overseas Music Scholarship for Performers (R95 000): Ammiel Bushakevitz (vocal accompanist). The winner of this scholarship will be invited to give a recital at Unisa.
  • DJ Roode Overseas Music Scholarship for Teachers (R95 000): Gareth Edward Ross (piano).
  • Samro Prize (R10 000): Gareth Edward Ross. This prize was awarded for the best performance of a South African composition.
  • Samro/Unisa/Brenda Rein Scholarship for Accompanists (R3 000): Ammiel Bushakevitz.
  • Gertrude Buchanan Memorial Prize (R2 000): Winand Grundling (organ). (This prize enables the candidate to compete again next year.)

The adjudicators were Dr Chats Devroop (Deputy Director [Professional] of the Music Directorate at Unisa), Ms Catherine Foxcroft (Rhodes University), Prof George Mugovhani (Tshwane University of Technology), Prof Malcolm Nay (University of the Witwatersrand) and Hugo Schreuder (Unisa).
