The theme of this year's World Food Day was "Food security: the challenge of climate change and bio-energy". World Food Day highlights the human right of each person to food and provides an occasion to increase awareness of the plight of the 850 million malnourished people in the world. Most of these people live in developing countries and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Unisa's Department of Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology observed World Food Day this year by launching, in partnership with the Thembelihle Farmers' Association, a project aimed at empowering the Mokobobo farming community in Lenasia. The aim of the project is to establish community-based research that will equip farmers with skills in vegetable production, farm business management and the marketing of farm produce. These skills will support them to realise sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative will assist the Mokobobo farming community to enjoy improved food security and empower them to generate an income. The Department of Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology, in turn, will benefit from the opportunity to improve its research and teaching capacity. |
