Unisa online - Midlands hosts young academics

16 young academics with Unisa staff

Following the launch of the Young Academics Programme on 15 September 2008 by Unisa's Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya, the 16 academics participating in this pilot project visited the Midlands Regional Hub in Rustenburg on Tuesday 14 October 2008. This was an effort to familiarise themselves with the regional management and how services are provided to the learners at a regional level.

Speaking to the academics, the Acting Regional Director, Mathews Kokong indicated that the Midlands region is challenging in the sense that it is geographically vast and predominantly rural. "The regional management team and the entire team are trying by all means to ensure that we serve our learners effectively," he said. The appointment of key staff members in the region will assist a great deal in achieving this. He emphasised that the Regional Operational Plan (ROP) is guided by the university's Institutional Operational Plan (IOP).

The programme will run for a period of three months and will fast track participants in areas of tuition, research and academic management.
