The Department of Religious Studies and Arabic held a photographic competition earlier this year. The competition called for photographs that depicted any religious person, place, symbol or activity. The department received over 100 entries and the judges eventually had to decide on the winning photographs from a group of 50.

Below are the winning photographs with a short description by the photographers.

First prize winner, Alon Judelman
"My boss and mentor, Dr Moshe Flashner (a senior scientist in the pharmaceutical industry) and observant Jew, was about to fulfil a lifelong ambition to donate a Torah Scroll for community use. This was done by engaging, at considerable expense, a highly qualified Scribe to devote a year of time and effort to painstakingly write the Scroll. It is customary to honour prominent individuals and family members with completed individual letters, thereby binding each person to the Scroll. We caught the Rabbi after he delivered an early morning lecture. A few of us with the nearly completed Torah Scroll, together with an entourage of eager students, clamoured into a side classroom to allow the Rabbi to write a letter. The Scroll was laid out on the desk. With infinite patience, using a quill, Rabbi Lefkowitz completed a single letter, exchanged a few brief words with Dr Flashner and then continued with his daily routine. The Torah Scroll was delivered, shortly thereafter, to its final destination with much fanfare and celebration."

Second prize winner, Rinus Groenewald
"This picture was taken while I was driving around the Gwent and Monmouthshire area of Wales. I had just visited Raglan Castle and Skenfrith Castle, and was trying to make my way to Abbey Dore without using the main roads, but got lost on the many small roads between the farms. I found this priory next to a small river between some farms with just a few houses close by. I don't know the exact location, but I believe it was close to the town of Grosmont."

Third prize winner, Zeenat Saloojee
"I took this photograph of the Blue Mosque while on holiday in Istanbul last year. The Blue Mosque is one of the most spectacular sights in Istanbul and one of the important heritage sights of the Turkish people. I was awestruck by the beauty and opulence of the mosque, and took many photos of the internal and external structure. They apparently switch on the lights of the Blue Mosque on certain nights only. I used to go every night to see whether they switched them on to view the magnificent sight."
