It was happy faces and excitement all around when a group of senior citizens received 20 sewing machines, fabric and thread at the Vukunzunzele Senior Service Centre in Diepsloot. The donation came from the Consumer Science Programme Group of the Department of Life and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). The initiative forms part of the Consumer Science Programme Group’s community outreach work.
The women were encouraged to make shopping bags from the fabric. Prof Elsa Toerien, Professor in Clothing and Textiles, will assess the bags for creativity and neatness. The creator of the best bag will win a prize.
Linda Blatt, Social Developer in the City of Johannesburg's Department of Human Development, who is in charge of the skills training programme for the aged, will hand over some of the sewing machines to another senior citizen group in Ivory Park.
