Unisa online - UNISA renews MoU with Ethiopia, to partner with TUT

Prof Pityana and Ethiopian Minister of Education Dr Sintayehu Waldemichael sign and exchange agreements

During 28 July-1 August 2008 UNISA successfully renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education in 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney with Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice Principal: Student Affairs and Learner Support Professor DL Mosoma and Director: African Relations Mr Kenneth Mubu visited Ethiopia to negotiate a new agreement to extend their programme for another 5 years with an understanding of bringing in other institutions.

It was discussed that there will be an expansion of the programme where UNISA will be partnering with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in order to broaden its current capacity in Ethiopia because of their strengths in Science, Engineering and Technology. This partnering will allow for the training of postgraduates thereby increasing the capacity of developing varsities with an emphasis on engineers.

Dr Prins Nevhutalu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Partnerships) at TUT was part of the delegation.

Prof Pityana excited about new agreement

Prof Pityana expressed excitement that the new agreement was a continuation of the work that started in 2007 following the opening of Akaki. He said the new agreement will usher in capacity growth of the faculty Science, Engineering and Business Management in Ethiopia.

An agreement will be signed between UNISA and TUT in early September detailing each institution’s contribution and its role in this project.
