Unisa online - Deaf CTA student has only praise for UNISA support

Back: Mrs Ousha Chanderjith (mother), Prof Neil Swemmer (Director: School of Accounting Sciences), and Mr Ronnie Chanderjith (father) Seated: Prof Hellicy Ngambi (Deputy Executive Dean of the College of Economic and Management Sciences), Ms Kashveera Chanderjith and Prof Elmarie Sadler (Head of the Department of Auditing)

After completing her BCompt degree and taking stock of all her options, Ms Kashveera Chanderjith, a deaf student from Durban, decided to enrol at UNISA for her BCompt honours degree (CTA) and was pleasantly surprised with the interest taken in her.

Prof Elmarie Sadler, Head of the Department of Auditing in the College of Economic and Management Sciences, contacted her after reading an article about her extraordinary accomplishments in the Beeld newspaper. They were so surprised about the interest taken in their daughter that the Chanderjiths decided to travel with her to the UNISA main campus in Pretoria to meet Prof Sadler and other staff members.

Kashveera perseveres

"I never received so much support and attention from an institution before", says Kashveera. Deaf from birth her parents, Ousha and Ronnie Chanderjith, decided to teach her to lip read rather than learning sign language. She went to a normal school and was the first deaf person in KwaZulu-Natal to write a normal matric. Despite several obstacles she finished her BCompt degree at the University of KZN (UKZN) within the minimum period of three years - this despite being able to follow only about a third of the lectures.

Prof Neil Swemmer, Director of the School for Accounting Sciences, warned Kashveera that she may encounter more obstacles once she starts her career as a chartered accountant. Mr Deena Moodley from UNISA’s Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities promised that while she is studying through UNISA that she will receive all the support she needs. He also invited her to inform the Centre about any problems she might encounter as a result of her disability during her studies.
