Unisa online - UNISA professor appointed as Vice Chair of PanSALB

Prof Zodwa Motsa

Head of the Department of English Studies Professor Zodwa Motsa has been appointed as the Vice Chair of the Pan South African Languages Board (PanSALB).

Prof Motsa says that it is an honour to serve on such a respectable board and has “been associated with PanSALB since indepence wherein I served in its structures as a member of the Gauteng PLC (Provincial Language Committee), the Vice Chair of its Mpumalanga NLB (National Language Body) and a standing interpreter and translator” she adds.

She feels that “this is a facet of language in action that brings to life the role of language as a living entity - specifically where language is an essential tool of transferring and transmitting information across a multitude of spheres”.

Role of the Board

Prof Motsa explains the role of the Board in that it “oversees the development of previously marginalised languages, the implementation of multilingualism and the protection of Linguistic Rights as enshrined in the Official and Heritage Languages of communities in the Republic.”

The Board also oversees and monitors the proper implementation of these language matters as carried out by PanSALB. “Projects of language development and language use in all spheres of life are pivotal in the actualisation of the Constitution,” she adds.
