On 14 July 2008 Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Pityana was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) at the Fifth Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning in London.
Prof Pityana has been awarded for his transformational leadership in restoring democracy to distance learning in South Africa and preparing UNISA for its role in this process.
He also presented a keynote address on 16 July at the same event titled A Decade of Development and Education in Africa: The Promise of Open and Distance Learning. Click here for his speech.
The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is an intergovernmental organisation created by Commonwealth Heads of Government to encourage the development and sharing of open learning/distance education knowledge, resources and technologies. COL is helping developing nations improve access to quality education and training.
