The new entrance building that is currently being built adjacent to the Theo van Wijk Building is taking shape with metal fixtures now being placed at this phase of the construction. The building of this structure began in 2006.
This building will house, among others, the front-line departments such as the UNISA Foundation and the UNISA Art Gallery. It will aid in security and access control, provide visitors a place to report and act as an information centre.
The initiative began when the need was identified to assist visitors and students to the campus with information and to monitor access to the campus. As the University is evolving from a correspondence to an Open Distance Learning university, our approach to dealing with access and entrance has changed. The University essentially lacks friendly access points, pedestrian pathways, and a friendly space to welcome people.
The estimated time of completion is set to take 18 to 20 months - to end of 2008 - beginning of 2009, weather permitting.
