Four-hundred and three UNISA graduates braved the rainy and cold weather recently to receive their degrees and diplomas in a graduation ceremony in Bloemfontein. The ceremony was attended by amongst others the Free State Premier Ms Beatrice Marshoff and the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UNISA Prof Mandla Makhanya who capped the graduates.
Addressing the graduates, Prof Makhanya encouraged them to go back to their communities and plough back, indicating that South Africa has many socio-economic challenges that needed all South Africans to tackle. “It’s time for you to go back and implement whatever you have learnt within your different communities, if you do not do this, your education would not mean anything to the less fortunate out there,” he urged the graduates.
He said today’s institutions of higher learning have to rise up to the challenges that continue to confront South Africa such as poverty, electricity shortage and crime amongst others. Prof Makhanya indicated that UNISA will always strive to offer education that meets the challenges that face the country.
